SURGICAL ARTHRITIS TREATMENTS
Arthritis is our nation's number one disabling disease, affecting more than 42 million Americans. Arthritis means joint inflammation and actually refers to over 100 various diseases that affect joints and other parts of the body. Arthritis can affect anyone, including young children. It can be a crippling disease unless those afflicted are treated by qualified professionals and follow appropriate guidelines. While arthritis management programs that utilize medication and physical therapy have shown remarkably improved success in controlling arthritis pain and restoring function, orthopaedic surgery may be required if the progressive damage to joints themselves cannot be halted or alleviated with medical management alone. There are two main types of surgery used to treat arthritis joints: Arthroscopy and Total Joint Replacement.

Of the two types of surgery, arthroscopy is the more conservative and involves removal of joint tissues that are causing pain and loss of motion. After insertion through a small incision, the surgeon uses the arthroscope, a surgical instrument using fiber?optics and videocamera technology, to visualize the interior structures in the joint. Then, utilizing small hand tools, powered shavers and burrs, the surgeon removes synovium, cartilage and bone from around the inflamed joint, removing tears, smoothing roughened areas, and trimming bone spurs. Usually performed on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia or a spinal, arthroscopy often provides prolonged relief of pain and improvement of function.
